Detroit, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's tennis team dropped its season opener at the University of Detroit, 6-1, on Saturday. The Warriors are an experienced team with high hopes for the 2013 season and took on an early season Division I opponent to kick things off.
The doubles teams look to be a strong suit for the Green and Gold although Saturday's matches set the Warriors behind in the early going. Division I scoring allows for just a single point for the doubles side of competition as opposed to the three points scored in Division II.
Jason Chen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) and
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) picked up the lone doubles victory for WSU with their 8-7 (7-4).
WSU faced the same fate in singles play as the lone victory came in the #2 position with Mohammed Fazyl Kechai's (Paris, France / Detroit's Martin Luther King) 6-3, 6-2 win. The fourth singles match was a very close battle for
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) as he lost in a third set tiebreaker 1-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7).
The Warriors will take on Toledo this Friday as they continue their early season out of conference contests.
