DETROIT - The Wayne State men's tennis team (4-4, 1-0 GLIAC) opened its GLIAC season with a convincing 6-3 victory over the University of Findlay on Thursday afternoon in the Multi-Purpose Indoor Facility.
WSU battled to a trio of close matches in doubles play with the lone point coming from
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville ) and
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) in the second flight 8-5. Findlay took first and third doubles by scores of 8-5 in the top match and 8-3 in the third giving the Oilers a 2-1 lead headed to singles play.
The Green and Gold would shine in singles play however as the Warriors took all but the top match of individual play.
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) won easily at number three spot 6-1, 6-1 as bettering him was Jon Grosek (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Divine Child) at sixth singles winning 6-1, 6-0.
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) was a 7-6, 6-4 winner in the second slot and FitzGerald picked up his second point at fourth singles with a 7-5, 6-2 decision.
The Warriors next compete on Friday against Tiffin at 1:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Indoor Facility.
