ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team concluded its four-match road trip in winning fashion Saturday, earning a 5-4 victory at Grand Valley.
The Warriors won three of the four road matches in six days to improve to 4-1 in the GLIAC and handed the Lakers their first loss of the season.
Grand Valley (3-1 GLIAC) had a 2-1 lead after the doubles. The Wayne State junior duo of
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) stayed undefeated with a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, the Warriors took four out of the six matches to win. WSU went up 4-3 as Moore, Briand and freshman
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) all won in straight sets. Moore won with a score of 6-2, 6-2 at the top flight, Briand was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 5 singles and Mitrache earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles.
Wayne State won the match as sophomore
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) earned a three-set victory at the second flight to earn WSU its fifth point. She won with scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
With the pair of victories against Grand Valley, Briand reached the 100-win milestone for her career. She has 50 wins in both singles and doubles.
The Warriors return home for three straight matches, beginning with a 3 p.m. Friday match against Tiffin.
