DETROIT -- Wayne State University women's tennis improved to 5-1 on Friday evening with a hard fought 6-3 win over the previously unbeaten Dragons of Tiffin (5-1). Head Coach Sheila Snyder also tallied a personal milestone as she coached her 400th career match at Wayne State.
Poor weather conditions forced the two squads to rotate between the outdoor courts and those located inside the Multipurpose Indoor Facility. The match concluded indoors.
The Green & Gold led 2-1 after the doubles portion of the competition. At. No. 1 doubles, Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) improved to 5-0 with an 8-5 victory. Tiffin won No. 2 doubles while Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) and Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
Moore collected a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to improve to 5-1 on the season at the top flight. The Dragons won two points at No. 2 and 3 singles.
Anastasia Burobina won easily at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-1. Li Briand improved to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) won at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
The Warriors will be back in action at home on Saturday against Ohio Dominican and Ashland on Sunday, with both matches starting at 10 AM.
