DETROIT -- It's hard to find a better rivalry when it comes to swimming in the GLIAC conference than that between Wayne State University and Grand Valley State University. The Warrior and Laker swimming and diving programs are set to face-off in the next chapter of that rivalry at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The meet will be held at the Matthaei Center Natatorium and will also be Senior Day for the Warriors as the last full home meet of the season.
Next month, both schools will be vying for the men's and women's GLIAC titles, as Wayne State and Grand Valley have finished 1-2 on each side in every year since 2008. On the women's side, GVSU and WSU have finished first and second for eight straight seasons.
Head coach
Sean Peters' Wayne State program has had the advantage lately, sweeping the GLIAC Championships for the third straight year in 2013. The WSU women's team has won four straight overall. The Lakers last won GLIAC titles in 2010 (men) and 2009 (women).
The Warrior teams spilt with Grand Valley last season in Allendale. The WSU women's squad won 189-111, while the Wayne State men dropped a 165-135 meet.
Both men's and women's teams for Wayne State and Grand Valley are also ranked inside the top 25 in the most recent CSCAA Division II team rankings. On the women's side, Grand Valley is ranked No. 9, while WSU is ranked 17th. The Grand Valley men are tied for second in the CSCAA rankings and the Warrior men are ranked No. 18 in the poll, which was released on Dec. 19.
The competition between the two schools Saturday is almost exactly one month prior to the 2014 GLIAC Championships. The conference championships are Feb. 12 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
