DETROIT -- On Senior Day and in front of 455 people at the Matthaei Natatorium Saturday, the Wayne State men's swimming and diving team earned a 153-147 victory over Grand Valley State University, ranked No. 2 in the most recent CSCAA poll. The dual meet victory by the 18th-ranked Warriors ended the Lakers' run of four straight victories in dual matches against WSU.
The victory was much larger initially (174-126) following the meet, but an obtuse ruling forced the Warriors to disqualify one WSU swimmer in each event he swam for the swimsuit he used during the meet. The swimsuit was permissable last season by FINA, the international swimming governing body, but was disallowed for the 2013-14 season. Even with the 42-point swing in points, the Warriors earned a six-point victory over the Lakers.
Freshman
Soren Holm (Rodovre, Denmark) won two individual events for the Warriors and earned an NCAA "B" cut qualifying standard with his time of 48.86 in the 100 butterfly. Holm won both butterfly events, also recording first with a time of 1:53.42 in the 200 butterfly.
Wayne State swept the top three spots in both diving competitions, earning 32 of a possible 38 points overall on both boards combined. Junior
Dylan Szegedi (Oregon, Ohio / St. Francis de Sales) won both boards convincingly, taking the one-meter board with a score of 334.25 and the three-meter board with a score of 338.00.
Junior
Kevin White (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) and freshman
Adam Littell (Holland, Mich. / Hamilton) placed second and third, respectively, on both boards. White had a score of 265.90 on the one-meter board and a tally of 274.90 on the three-meter springboard. Littell had scores of 246.40 (three-meter) and 265.90 (one-meter).
Senior
Kristian Larsen (Frederiksberg, Denmark) placed first in the 100 freestyle (46.93) and was second in the 200 freestyle (1:44.55).
In his first individual event for Wayne State, freshman
Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Colombia) outswam the rest of the field in the 100 backstroke. He finished with a time of 51.31. Junior
Lucas Fernandez Vilanova (Valencia, Spain) placed third in the same event, touching the wall in 52.26.
The same two finished 1-2 in the 200 backstroke. Fernandez Vilanova was first with a time of 1:52.20, while Molina Perez was less than a second behind in 1:53.08.
Sophomore
Eric Gensheimer (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington) sped his way to victory in the 50 freestyle, outpacing the field in a time of 21.68. Classmate
Ben Winn (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) finished third for the Warriors in the 50 free, earning a time of 21.78. Gensheimer also was second to Larsen in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 47.39.
Sophomore
Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) had the top time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing first with a time of 59.10. Hansen was also second in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.66), losing by just .05 to GVSU's Milan Medo.

The 200 freestyle relay squad of Winn, Fernandez Vilanova, freshman

Cameron Fryzel (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western) placed second with a time of 1:26.09.
WSU was also without top freshman sprinter
Till Barthel, who missed the meet due to illness.
The Warriors return competitively to the pool Friday, traveling to Findlay for a 5 p.m. dual meet.
