The Warriors earn dual meet victory over rival Lakers on Senior Day

DETROIT
-- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team earned a 178-122 victory Saturday over ninth-ranked Grand Valley State University on Senior Day and in front of 455 people at the Matthaei Natatorium. The Warriors, ranked No. 17 in the most recent CSCAA poll, won 11 of the 16 events to secure their fifth straight win in as many seasons over the Lakers.

The Warriors established two new NCAA qualifying standards during the meet. WSU also had three swimmers earn multiple individual victories.

Junior Gloria Martinez Perez (Merida, Spain) won three individual events for WSU in her first meet of the season, touching the wall first in the 50 freestyle (24.46), 100 butterfly (58.17) and 200 IM (2:09.58).

Senior Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won two events, placing first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.29. She was also victorious in the 200 backstroke, winning by more than five seconds with a time of 2:03.29. Her time in the 200 backstroke earned her an NCAA "B" cut qualifying standard.

Junior Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia) dominated the 200 butterfly, winning by more than six seconds with a time of 2:04.22. She also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:10.96 and was second in the 200 IM (2:09.68) to Martinez Perez.

Freshman Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) led a 1-2-3 finish for WSU in the 100 backstroke. She placed first in 58.51, while sophomore Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich. / Traverse City West) and senior Cristina Busquets Garcia (Banyoles, Spain) finished second and third, respectively, with times of 58.67 and 59.61. Maraskine also placed second in the 200 backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:09.05.

WSU took three out of the top four spots in each diving event. Freshman Elizabeth Rawlings (Armada, Mich. / Romeo) was second in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 273.30, while placing third in the three-meter event (280.40). Senior Paige Kortman (Holland, Mich. / Holland) took second on the three-meter board (291.50) and was third on the one-meter springboard (267.50).

Sophomore diver Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) qualified with NCAA qualifying standards on both boards during the meet. She placed fourth on both boards, but secured qualifying scores, earning a score of 267.30 on the one-meter board and 265.45 on the three-meter board.

Junior Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) won the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.73 and placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.60).

Senior Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich. / Adams) and sophomore Hannah Loesch (Harbor Springs, Mich.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Scott had a time of 1:05.23, while Loesch touched in 1:06.53. Loesch also was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.25), while Scott placed third in the 100 freestyle (54.15).

Senior Kelsey Dischler was the top finisher for the Warriors in the 1000 freestyle, placing third with a time of 10:58.07.

WSU won both of the relays. The 200 medley relay team of Azambuja, sophomore Manuela Ferreira (Ibague, Colombia), Martinez Perez and freshman Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) combined for a winning time of 1:47.44. The 200 free relay quartet of Azambuja, Prentis, Heitchue and Scott touched the wall with a time of 1:37.32.

The Warriors return competitively to the pool Friday, visiting Findlay for a 5 p.m. dual meet.
