MIDLAND, Mich. – The Warriors (14-0 overall and GLIAC) have claimed a spot in the GLIAC Tournament finals for a second year in a row.
The Wayne State University women's tennis team defeated Tiffin University 5-2 on Saturday in a GLIAC Tournament semifinal matchup to advance to the championship match. WSU defeated Tiffin 5-1 in the 2013 GLIAC tournament semifinal matchup as well.
Tiffin took an early 2-1 lead over Wayne State after doubles play. WSU's seniors
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / Ecole Secondaire Felix-Leclerc) earned an 8-2 victory at the top flight in doubles.
Needing four points for the victory, WSU rallied and came out with the first four wins in singles.
Wayne State picked up wins at second through sixth flights in singles.
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Warren Cousino) earned a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles and
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) posted a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles.
Briand won 6-1, 6-1 at the singles fourth flight, junior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) claimed victory with 6-1, 6-3 at fifth flight in singles.
The Warriors remain undefeated with 14 win overall and in the GLIAC.
The Warriors will play at 8:30 Sunday in the Championship match against the winner of the Northwood / Grand Valley State match.
