WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Freshman
Clement Charriere won his fourth singles match of the spring Monday, but the Wayne State University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 dual match against No. 15-ranked Rollins College.
Charriere (Marseille, France) posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 win over Rollins' Jason Alabaster, who is ranked No. 34 in the Division II national singles rankings.
Rollins opened the match with three doubles victories to go up 3-0.
In singles, junior
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) battled in at the sixth flight for Wayne State, winning the first set 6-3, but eventually he fell in a third-set super tiebreaker as Rollins' Jacobo Herrero posted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win.
The Warriors lost the remaining singles matches in straight sets, although senior
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) took Rollins' No. 5 singles player Ari Davis to a second-set tiebreak. Joseph lost in the tiebreaker, 7-5, as Davis earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) victory.
With the loss, the Warriors (1-5 overall) wrapped up their four-match Florida trip 1-3. Two of Wayne State's three losses came against teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation, with No. 8 Saint Leo University also winning over Wayne State on March 7.
The Warriors next competes in their first GLIAC match of the season, beginning a three-match weekend at Tiffin for a 1 p.m. start on March 21.
