FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team used a comeback Saturday to earn its second-straight victory to open the GLIAC season. The Warriors won four of the six matches in singles, including winning the final match, to earn a 5-4 win at the University of Findlay.
Wayne State improved to 2-0 in the GLIAC and 3-5 overall with the victory. Findlay falls to 4-6 and 0-4 in league play.
With the score tied 4-4 on Saturday, the match came down to the No. 6 singles spot and WSU junior
Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy).
Keating dropped the first set, but earned a crucial second-set tiebreak win and followed by earning a service break in the third set to win the match. He defeated Findlay's Connor Majdalani, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 to clinch the 5-4 match win for the Warriors.
Wayne State opened the match down 2-1 after Findlay took two out of the three doubles matches. The Warriors earned the lone doubles victory at the second flight, where senior
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and sophomore
Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) posted a crucial 9-8 (8-6) victory.
Prior to Keating's match-clinching victory in singles, WSU had earned three more victories to come-from-behind to tie the match. Wayne State was winners at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
At the third flight, FitzGerald dropped just four games on his way to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Findlay's Djordje Ljubinkovic. Sophomore
Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France / Martin Luther King) posted a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles, while senior
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) also earned a straight sets win, tallying a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the fifth flight.
The Warriors wrap up a three-match weekend in Ohio on Sunday with a 2 p.m. match at No. 47-ranked Ohio Dominican.
