TAMPA, Fla. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches Thursday to earn a 6-3 win over No. 45 Chesnut Hill College.
The Warriors, ranked No. 50 nationally, improved to 18-2 with the win, while Chestnut Hill fell to 13-6. The singles matches were played first Thursday, with both teams winning three matches. Chestnut Hill won the top three flights, while the Warriors earned victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
Junior
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que.) earned a 7-5, 4-6 11-9 win at the fourth flight, sophomore
Julia Kamenko (Thornhill, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 5 doubles, while freshman
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) also earned a straight-sets win with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 6 singles.
Tied 3-3 entering doubles play, Wayne State swept the final three matches for the win. At the No. 1 flight, Briand and junior
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) posted an 8-5 victory.
Freshman
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and sophomore
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) won 7-4 in the tiebreaker to win, while Kamenko and senior
Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) tallied an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Warriors have won both matches this spring and are scheduled to play five more matches in Florida. Wayne State visits Saint Leo on Friday.
