Men's Tennis Tops Tiffin in First Round of GLIAC Tournament

The fourth-seeded Warriors defeat No. 5 seed Tiffin 5-1 to reach the GLIAC Tournament semifinals.

MIDLAND, Mich.
-- The Wayne State University men's tennis team earned a 5-1 victory over Tiffin University on Friday in a first-round GLIAC Tournament matchup at the Midland Community Tennis Center. The No. 4 seed Warriors (10-8 overall) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament and will face top-seeded Northwood (15-3 overall) at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

Wayne State defeated the Dragons by dropping just one match Friday night. Three doubles flights were played to start the match, with WSU winning two of the three flights to lead 2-1.

At No. 2 doubles, senior Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) won their 13th match as a doubles duo, winning over Tiffin's pair of Robbie Ball and Agustin Mangone, 8-3.

The Warriors also tallied an 8-3 victory at the third flight in doubles after senior Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and sophomore Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France) topped TU's Ben Fievet and Jordon Simon-Chopard. It was the seventh-straight win for the pair at No. 3 doubles.

Wayne State closed out the match win by winning three straight singles matches. The flights were played in order in singles, starting with the No. 1 spot and cycling down through the order.

At the top flight, Charriere earned a straight-sets, 7-5, 6-3 win over Fievet to give WSU a 3-1 advantage. Freshman Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) followed with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles over Ball.

The Warriors clinched the match with FitzGerald's win at No. 3 singles. FitzGerald dropped just five games on his way to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Tiffin's Kyle Johnson.

With the victory, Wayne State advanced to the final four of the GLIAC Tournament for the sixth straight year under head coach Bryan Morrow. Northwood defeated Michigan Tech, 5-2, on Friday to reach the semifinals. WSU dropped a 6-3 match in its regular-season finale to Northwood, but Wayne State led 2-1 after doubles and the match came down to the final two flights.
