Women's Tennis Prepares for NCAA Championships

Wayne State (25-4) faces the two-time defending champions, Armstrong Atlantic, in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.
-- The Wayne State University women's tennis team will make its first appearance at the NCAA Tennis Championship Round of 16 in school history on Wednesday morning. WSU is one of the final 16 Division II women's tennis teams vying for a national championship.

The Warriors (25-4) are set to face the two-time defending national champions and No. 2-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University (25-1) at 8 a.m. in the Round of 16. The match is set to be played at Sanlando Park.

Armstrong Atlantic has won five of the past six national titles overall and has a storied women's tennis history, having reached the NCAA Round of 16 in each of the past 20 seasons. The Pirates only loss during the 2013-14 season came against No. 1-ranked Barry University in a 5-4 loss on Feb. 23.

WSU reached the NCAA Round of 16 by defeating Northwood University in a regional final matchup in a match played in Midland, Mich. It was the first victory for the Warriors in a regular season or postseason match against the Timberwolves since 1995. Head coach Sheila Snyder's squad has also doubled the amount of NCAA victories during their 2014 run. The Warriors are 4-8 all-time in NCAA play after their NCAA Midwest Regional wins over the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Northwood.

Junior co-captains Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) and Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) have eached moved into the top five in career doubles and singles wins. Briand has is third in school history with 73 wins in singles, while Moore is fourth with 66 career triumphs in singles. Briand and Moore, who have played as doubles partners since the beginning of their freshman year, are tied for fifth all-time in WSU history with 70 doubles wins. They have also tied the single-season record for victories in doubles with 24.

Briand also tied the single-season record for singles wins in a season in the NCAA Midwest Regional final against Northwood. Her victory at No. 4 singles was her 27th win of the season, tying her with former Wayne State standout Kristina Goranskaya. Briand is 27-3 this season, primarily at No. 4 singles.

Wayne State established a new mark for wins in a season during the 2013-14 campaign, surpassing the 2011-12 team that recorded 22 victories. Wayne State tied and passed that team in the final weekend of the regular season. The Warriors, which also reached the finals of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time in school history this year, also finished with a 13-1 mark in conference play this season.
