DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team took a 177-115 loss to Division I opponent Oakland in the first meet of the regular season on Friday evening inside the Matthaei Natatorium. The Warriors won five events over the Golden Grizzlies, four individual and one relay.
RELAY RESULTS- WSU claimed first in the 200 free with the quartet of freshman
Lezlie Bueno Estrada (Monte Urales, Mexico), junior
Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow), sophomore
Makayla Myers (Hudsonville, Mich.) and junior
Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich.) with a mark of 1:38.49. The Warriors also placed second, third and fourth in this relay with marks of 1:42.12, 1:44.21 and 1:46.82, respectively.
- The foursome of Maraskine, senior
Hannah Loesch (Pensacola, Fla.), freshman
Delayni Kornak-Kotarba (Comstock Park, Mich. / Rockford) and Bueno Estrada placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.48.
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS- Wayne State garnered top-3 finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving. Junior
Elizabeth Rawlings (Armada, Mich. / Romeo) won diving events with scores of 253.25 in the 1-meter and 265.20 for the 3-meter. She qualified for the NCAA Pre-Qualifying Meet in the 3-meter diving event. Senior
Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich.) placed second in the 1-meter (244.95) and third in the 3-meter (235.55), while sophomore
Holly Krill (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Northern) recorded a third-place finish in the 1-meter with a mark of 223.35 and second in the 3-meter (245.05).
- Maraskine finished first in both the 100 and 200 back with a times of 59.71 and 2:12.68.
- The Warriors took the first four places in the 200 IM with freshman
Hannah Berich (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) winning with a time of 2:13.77 in her first collegiate meet. Freshman
Tai Furnari (Pleasant Ridge, Mich. / Ferndale) finished second (2:17.04), senior
Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) placed third (2:20.83) and freshman
Ellie Dean (Midland, Mich. / Dow) recorded a fourth-place finish (2:21.49), respectively.
- In the 100 breast, Loesch touched the finish line in 1:07.98 to place second, while Bueno Estrada finished third in the 100 free with a mark of 53.39.
- Bueno Estrada also posted a second-place finish in the 50 free (24.46) and Myers claimed fourth with a time of 25.71.
- Furnari and Berich recorded a third and fourth-place finishes with times of 2:11.96 and 2:12.03 in the 200 fly, respectively.
UP NEXT - WSU will travel to Ashland for the first GLIAC match of the regular season on Nov. 7. The meet is slated for 1 p.m. at Messerly Natatorium. The Warriors defeated the Eagles, 123-97, during the 2014-15 season.
