LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (20-1) earned a hard fought 5-4 victory over Florida Southern (2-6) on Saturday to improve to 20-1 on the season.
Seniors
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que.) won at No. 1 doubles 9-8 (7-4). Â Sophomore
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and freshmanÂ
Liz de Souza Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) fell at No. 2 doubles 8-3.  The Warriors snapped the 1-1 tie by taking the final flight of doubles as the sophomore duo of
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Moore drooped her No. 1 singles match 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 while Mitrache won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 5-7, 4-0 (retired).
Junior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que.) was defeated 6-0, 6-1.  Briand also lost her match at No. 4 singles in straight sets. Junior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont.) topped her opponent at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-1.
With the match in the balance, Ghellere delivered a WSU victory 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.
WSU will conclude its spring break trip to Florida with a match against Minnesota State Moorhead on Monday.
