HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad placed sixth at the 2015 GLIAC Championship which concluded on Friday at Hillsdale College.
In WSU's inaugural season of 2013, the Warriors finished 10th at the conference meet with 21 points, then last year improved to sixth place with 45.5 points. This year, Wayne State totaled a school record 61 points.
Grand Valley State won the team title with 159 points and was followed by Hillsdale (109.5), Tiffin (100), Ashland (91.5), Findlay (73) and the Warriors. Trailing WSU were Malone (55), Saginaw Valley State (33), Northern Michigan and Walsh (29 each), Ferris State (25), Lake Erie (22), Lake Superior State (14), Northwood (13), Michigan Tech (4) and Ohio Dominican (1).
WSU's 4x100 relay quartet of
Leah Ellis (Battle Creek, Mich. / Central),
Kierra Johnson (Flint, Mich. / Brandon),
Jewel Wilson (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern) and
Dazmonique Carr (Lawnside, N.J. / Haddon Heights) placed second in a school record time of 47.68.
Carr also finished second in the 400m race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time (and a school record time) of 55.82.
"Daz was huge today," said head coach
Rick Cummins. "The 4x100 was terrific. It was a great meet for the Warriors."
Freshman
Karrington Seals (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and sophomore
Christina Kollien (Alpena, Mich.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively in the 100m hurdles with times of 14.26 and 14.39.
Wayne State earned five points in the 5k race as juniors
Chelsea Johnson (Oxford, Mich.) and
Kayla Balfour (St. Clair, Mich.) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Johnson's time of 17:13.81 was her third provisional time in the 5k this spring. Balfour recorded a time of 17:26.50, while senior
Kayla Smade (Columbus, Mich. / St. Clair) was 13th (18:16.85). Smade earned a point for WSU with her eighth-place finish in the finals of the 1500m race. Her time was 4:37.29, which bettered her qualifying time.
The Warrior 4x400 relay team of Carr, Ellis, Seals and sophomore
Imani Bush (Canton, Ohio / South) finished eighth in a time of 3:56.17.
Sophomores
Elizabeth Herriman (Adrian, Mich. / Sand Creek) and
Gabrielle Herriman (Adrian, Mich. / Sand Creek) led WSU in the shot put by finishing 10th and 12th, respectively. Elizabeth's toss of 13.25m (43-05.75) was a school record. Gabrielle had a throw of 12.77m, while freshman
Lauren Bohn (Windsor, Ont. / E. J. Lajeunesse Catholic H.S.) was 13th with a toss of 12.16m (39-10.75).
Elizabeth Herriman led Wayne State with a 12th-place finish in the discus (40.83m), while freshman
Jessie Kluz (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Sterling Heights/MMSTC) was seventh in the high jump (1.65m).
Wilson placed 13th in the triple jump at 10.13m.
