DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (24-3) fell to Northwood (19-2) 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional Opening Round at the WSU Tennis Courts. The Warriors entered the match as the top seed in the region while the Timberwolves were seeded fourth. WSU was also ranked 19th nationally.
Wayne State dropped the first two doubles matches as
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) and
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) dropped their match at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
The top doubles team in the region (15th nationally)
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) won a hard fought battle at No. 1 doubles 9-8 (8-6).
Moore went on to tie the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the top flight of singles.
However, Northwood won points at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to secure the victory and advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) fell at No. 6 singles 6-2, 7-5 while Briand lost 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. The match ended when Kamenko was edged 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
The Warriors participated in their third straight NCAA Tournament and their ninth in the past 11 years.
