DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (3-3 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) suffered a 5-4 heartbreak after a six-hour match to Grand Valley State (5-1 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) inside the WSU Multipurpose Indoor Facility on Sunday morning.
"I thought we rebounded well today after yesterday's match," head coach
Sheila Snyder said. "We came out with energy and played a very solid Grand Valley team, but came up a little short."
DOUBLES RESULTS
- Senior co-captains
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) collected the Warriors' first point of the match by defeating Abby Perkins and Livia Christman, 8-5, at the third doubles flight.
- Junior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) and freshman
Julia Walz (Rastatt, Germany) topped Aimee Moccia and Rachel Somner in a close, 9-8 (7-3), match at No. 2 doubles, while sophomores
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont.) fell, 8-5, to Madison Ballard and Alex Sweeney at the first doubles position.
SINGLES RESULTS
- Hughes topped Sam Schrepferman in two sets (6-2, 6-4) at the sixth singles flight, while Kuznetsova won, 6-2, 7-6(4), over Ballard at the No. 1 singles.
- Sophomore
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) fell in the clinching match, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, to Heiniger at the fifth singles position, and Ghellere recorded a three set loss (7-6(4), 1-6, 6-1) to Perkins at the third singles flight.
- Peisachovitz was defeated by Sweeney, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, while Walz dropped a two-set match (6-3, 6-4) to Moccia at the fourth singles position.
UP NEXT
- WSU will host Michigan Tech in a GLIAC showdown on Oct. 8 at the WSU Tennis Courts. The match is slated for 10 a.m. The Warriors defeated the Huskies, 8-1, a year ago.
