MIDLAND, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis team (9-2 overall, 9-2
GLIAC) advanced to the
GLIAC semifinals Friday after earning a 5-1 win over Michigan Tech (7-6 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) in the opening round of the conference tournament.
The Warriors took two points in the doubles division, securing wins from senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) in the the second flight and freshmen
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia / SMK Seri Hartamas) and
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) in the third flight. Mitrache and Da-Silva defeated Sandra Cvetanovic and Natalia Parra 8-1, while Liong and van Meet won 8-1 over Anabella Neri and Allenca Rolim.
The Huskies earned a point at No. 1 doubles, as junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) fell to Ivona Gorgioski and Vicky Quinde, 8-2.
However, Wayne State clinched the match with three points in singles. Mitrache defeated Gorgioski 6-1, 6-2 in the first flight, with Da-Silva winning 6-3, 6-0 over Cvetanovic and Liong taking a 6-0, 6-0 win over Annabella Neri.
Kuznetsova (No. 2), Ghellere (No. 4), and van Meer (No. 6) did not have their matches completed thanks to the clincher.
The win over the Huskies was the second triumph against the opponent for Wayne State. The Warriors previously defeated MTU 6-3 on Sept. 17.
UP NEXT
The third-seeded Warriors will meet the second-seeded Northwood Timberwolves at 3:45 Saturday. NU got the best of Wayne State, winning 6-3 on Oct. 10.
