SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (0-1) was defeated by the University of Detroit Mercy (2-2), 6-1, in the first match of the Warriors' spring schedule on Saturday evening. The match saw one member of the Warriors' singles team and a member of the doubles team come away with a victory against the Titans at Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Michigan.
SINGLES RESULTS
- Sophomore Taylor Vane (Southhampton, England / Peter Symonds College) was the only member of the singles player to scratch out a win, defeating Detroit Mercy's Kacper Stelmaszak 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
- Senior Clement Charriere (Marseille, France / Chevreul Blancarde) (6-1, 5-7, 6-4) and teammate Harvey Reed (Winchester, Hampshire, England / Peter Symonds College) (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) both lost in the third and final set in the No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively.
- Freshman Mats Westkamp (Born, Germany / Beethoven-Gymnasium Born) lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match against Titans No. 1 Patryk Koscielski.
- The Warriors' No. 2 competitor Luke Ruocco (Lewes, England / Priory) was defeated in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in his singles match.
- Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington [Detroit Mercy]) was beaten by Titans No. 3 Nathan Ponton in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, to conclude the singles matches on the afternoon.
DOUBLES RESULTS
- The Westkamp/Mertz duo prevailed over their No. 3 doubles counterparts, winning 6-4 in the first doubles match of the night.
- Charriere and Vane's pursuit of a No. 1 doubles win was denied, losing to the Titan No. 1 duo 7-5.
- Senior Ryan Carlson (Armada, Mich. / Armada) and Harvey Reed were slowed by the Conley/Ponton duo for Detroit 7-5, in the final doubles match of the night.
UP NEXT
- The Warriors will travel to the Shadow Valley Racquet Club in Toledo, Ohio to take on the University of Toledo on Saturday, February 11, 2017. The match is slated for 4 p.m.
