Women’s Foilists and Sabreuse Compete at MFC Regional Championships

Six Warriors competed in the NCAA Fencing Regionals held at Wayne State.

Zuzanna Sobczak advanced to the NCAA Fencing Championships with her fifth-place finish at the Midwest Regionals.

DETROIT -- Six members of the Wayne State University women's fencing team participated in the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Saturday morning at WSU. Three members of the foil team and three members of the sabre team competed in an attempt to punch their tickets to the NCAA Fencing Championships in Indianapolis on March 25-26.  Each weapon featured five-touch round-robin bouts.

FOIL RESULTS
- Participating in the foil were senior Zuzanna Sobczak (Gdansk, Poland), sophomore Kasia Lachman (Poznan, Poland) and junior Bridget Gibbons (Beverly Hills, Mich. / Birmingham Groves).
 
- Sobczak finished in fifth place posting a 6-3 record and +9 in touches (33-24), which should earn her a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.  Most notably, she defeated defending national champion Eleanor Harvey from Ohio State 2-1

- Lachman placed sixth with a 4-5 record, and will have to wait until Tuesday see if she earns one of the two national at-large bids.  Lachman was -5 (27-32) in touches.
 
- Gibbons lost all nine bouts to finish in 10th place at the Regional Championship.
 
SABRE RESULTS
- Sophomore Pati Palczynska (Konstancin-Jeziorna, Poland), junior Julie Saint-Cricq (Pau, France) and junior Despina Tsitlakidou (Troy, Mich. / Birmingham Seaholm) all competed with some on the best sabreuse's in the region.
 
- Palczynska led the squad with an 11-4 record and was +22 (67-45) in touches to finish third.  Among her victories were a 5-4 triumph over 2015 national champion Francesca Russo of Notre Dame.  Two of her four setbacks were by 5-4 scores to Ohio State's Sarah Merza, the runner-up at today's regional and OSU's Alexa Antipas, a Second Team All-American a year ago.
 
- Saint-Cricq finished eighth with a 9-6 record and was +10 (59-49) in touches.  She finished tied with four other fencers with nine victories each with touch differential being the tiebreaker.
 
- Tsitlakidou finished the day by compiling a 2-13 mark to place 14th in the regional.

UP NEXT
The WSU women's foil team will be participating in the Absolute Fencing Gear Long Beach Foil Grand Prix on March 18th and 19th in Long Beach, Calif.
