DETROIT – The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team fell in its first dual meet of the 2018 calendar year, as the Warriors were bested by guest Grand Valley State 178-118 at the Matthaei Natatorium on Saturday.
RELAYS
The Warriors won the 400 medley relay and placed second in the 400 freestyle relay. In the medley relay, junior
Dima Drobnych, sophomore
Sasha Palazzo, junior
Rasmus Olsen and sophomore
Ryan Katulski combined for a time of 3:23.53. In the 400 free relay, senior
Tyler Roshak joined Katulski, Drobnych and Palazzo for a second-best time of 3:08.51.
INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS
Drobnych won the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.10, as well as the 200 backstroke (1:51.60).
Palazzo won the 100 breaststroke in 57.33.
Sophomore Joao Ribeiro was the top performer in the 200 butterfly, completing the event in 1:55.40. He also won the 200 IM (1:53.95).
In the 50 free,
Ryan Katulski won with his time of 21.35.
Olsen won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.91.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES
Sophomore Leo de Oliveira took second in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:49.78. He also finished second in the 500 free (4:46.73).
Olsen was bested only by teammate Ribeiro in the 200 fly, finishing with a time of 1:56.75.
Senior
Khayman Jones was the runner-up in the 1-meter diving event (267.00).
Katulski was the second-place finisher in the 100 free with a time of 47.63.

The Warriors will return home on Friday, hosting GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley State for a 5:00 meet inside the Matthaei Natatorium.
