DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Athletics Dance Team will be holding open tryouts for the 2018-2019 season on April 29th at 12:00 p.m. inside the Matthaei.
TRYOUT DETAILS
Eligibility: Team participants must be a full-time student at Wayne State University (minimum 12 credit hours) during the fall and winter semesters of participation and must maintain above a 2.0 GPA. Candidates must bring copy of Application and Consent Form to tryout. (On website) Candidates should bring a photo of themselves to the audition.Â
What to Wear: Candidates must wear
all black form fitting clothes so judges may see proper lines. Jazz pants/shorts, half-top/tank-top, jazz shoes/turners and tennis shoes are acceptable. Hair and makeup should be game/ performance ready.Â
What To Expect (may include but not limited to): toe touch, double/ triple pirouette (minimum), right and left battement (kick), right and left leap, leap in second, switch leap, switch open leap, calypso leap, angel jump, tilt jump/ leap, leg hold (to show flexibility) and a fouette'/turns in second combination. All requirements will be scored by a set of judges. Requirements may be demonstrated individually or within the tryout routine. You will be asked to execute the skills listed below for auditions. In addition to the skills listed, you will be observed throughout the tryout on your attitude, ability to learn, enthusiasm, projection and overall performance. We will be looking for your ability and potential to become a collegiate dancer. Candidates will learn theÂ
fight song, a sideline, as well as short routines. Â Participants should expect to stay through entire judging process. Results will be announced following tryouts. New dance team members will have a short meeting following announcements.Â

           12:30pm – Learn Fight Song
           1:15pm – Learn Jazz Combo
           2:00pm – Learn Sideline Routine and Chant
           2:45pm - Learn Pom Combo
           3:30pm – Learn Hip Hop Combo
           5:00pm – Final Auditions (in groups of 2)
- Audition schedule subject to change.
- Please note: Candidates will not be taught how to do skills at tryouts.
Video Tryout:
If you are interested in becoming a member of the WSU Dance Team and are unable to make tryouts, a video submission may be requested. Please email Head Coach
Kaithlin Fettes to request this tryout. Â Video submission candidates will be notified by email on April 29
th.
PLEASE INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ON YOUR VIDEO:
- A short introduction stating your name and a brief description of why you want to be on the Wayne State Dance Team, and what makes you a valuable team member.
- Performance of skills listed above and any special skills you want to demonstrate.
- 30 seconds of Pom routine, 30 seconds of Jazz routine, and 30 seconds of Hip Hop routine (can be self-choreographed or portion of a past routine)
- Also include: Dance Team Application, Physical, and Current Photo (does not need to be professional)
- You may be required to learn and submit the Fight Song with your audition video.
Physicals:Â All participants must provide a physical within the last 60 days. Â There will be no athletes permitted to tryout without a copy of your physical (dated within the last 60 days). Â All physicals must be submitted for approval by April 24
th.
Participants will not be permitted to tryout if a physical is not presented and approved prior to the audition date. Please see attached for physical submission information.

Summer Practices:
- All schedule information will be given at the first meeting for the 2018-2019 Dance Team.
- Mandatory Practice Weekends will be held once a month in May, June, and July.
- Mandatory Pre Camp Practice will be held one week prior to UDA camp.
- NDA Camp: July 25th, 26th, 27th
- Fundraisers will take place each month during the summer and are mandatory.
School Year Practices:
- YOU MUST SCHEDULE CLASSES/ WORK AROUND PRACTICES AND GAMES
*Coach must approve any scheduling during practice time
- Practices will begin approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of classes
- Weekly Practices Monday's 5-7:30pm, Friday's 4-6:30pm.**
- Weekly Lift: TBD
- Practice with band approximately 1 time weekly for Football season- tentatively on Thursday's
- Football games on Saturdays, Basketball Thursdays and Saturdays
- Practices will extend to 3 days per week should the team attend Nationals
- Practices are subject to change and athletes will be notified prior to the start of classes, games, or events.
- Athletes must remain registered as full-time students to be eligible.
- Athletes will be required to participate in fundraising year round.
Athletes selected for the Wayne State University Dance Team will receive a copy of the team rules and regulations at the first team meeting following tryouts. This document must be read in its entirety and signed.
