GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team competed at day one of the 2019 ITA Midwest Regional Tournament, hosted by Davenport on Friday.
A SINGLES RESULTS
Ninth-seeded sophomore
Laura Cazacu (London, England) won a three-set match versus GLIAC opponent Silvia Verebes from Ferris State (6-4, 5-7, 10-3). In the second round, she topped Grand Valley State's Marily Canellopoulos (6-2, 6-3).
Junior
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) notched a victory over Illinois-Springfield's Meagan Flight (7-5, 6-2). She advanced to tally a win against Walsh's 13th-seeded Mercedes Fernandez (6-4, 7-6(5)).
Freshman
Teodora Radu (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) won her match vs. Findlay's Luciana Pereyra (6-0, 6-1), but lost to Tiffin's Abbie Jade Riley in the second round (6-3, 6-3).
Junior
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) fell in the first round to 15th-seeded Alina Kislitskaya from UIndy (7-5, 6-3). In the first round of consolation matches, Liong won her match versus Ferris State's Isabela Paixao (6-1, 6-3).
B SINGLES RESULTS
Freshman
Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) blanked Kayley Gimbel from Findlay (6-0, 6-0). She advanced to notch a third-set victory over Ferris State's Samantha Stephenson (6-4, 4-6, 10-5).
Junior
Tanja Skalda (Prien am Chiemsee, Germany) swept conference opponent Emma Philippus from Davenport (6-0, 6-0). Skalda fell in her second-round match against Drury's Kseniia Eremina (7-5, 6-3).
Sophomore
Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) edged Bellarmine's Channing Varnum (6-3, 6-3). In the second round, Jewell topped seventh-seeded Leticia Lunge (6-4, 6-4).
A DOUBLES RESULTS
Cazacu and Liong blanked Illinois-Springfield's Ashley Long and Lucy Pineiro, 8-0.
Da-Silva and Radu dropped their first-round match 8-2 vs. UIndy's first-seeded duo of Nikol Alekseeva and Anna Novikova.
B DOUBLES RESULTS
Skalda and Radu won 8-2 vs. league opponents Nicole Johnson and Sara Neves from Saginaw Valley State.
