Men's Tennis Ranked Fourth in Oracle/ITA Division II Regional Poll

The Warriors also received votes in the national rankings.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad has been ranked fourth in the Oracle/ITA Division II Regional Preseason Rankings, released on January 15th.

Additionally, the Green and Gold received votes in the Oracle/ITA Division II National Rankings.

The Warriors opened their 2019-20 season at the Toledo Rocket Invitational in September, where junior Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and freshman Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) both received All-Tournament recognition.  The Green and Gold team then competed in the 2019 ITA Midwest Regional Tournament, followed by the Northwestern Ohio Racer Invitational.

After an exceptional September performance, Karcz was named NCAA Division II UTR/ITA National Player of the Month.  Last season, he was voted 2019 GLIAC Player of the Year (the first men's tennis player from Wayne State since it was instituted in 1983) and selected to the All-GLIAC First Team.  Karcz was also named ITA Midwest Region Player to Watch, received ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition, and finished the year ranked sixth in singles in the Midwest Region.

Head coach Bryan Morrow is in his 12th season at the helm of the Green and Gold.  During the 2018-19 academic year, he led the Warriors to arguably the best season since 1981.  WSU went undefeated in conference matches, claiming the GLIAC regular-season title.  Prior to winning the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, Morrow was recognized as GLIAC Coach of the Year.  Additionally, six players from his 2018-19 team were recognized with All-GLIAC honors.  Under Morrow's leadership, the squad advanced to the second round of the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.

Wayne State leads the GLIAC in the Midwest Regional poll.  Other conference opponents that are regionally ranked include:  Ferris State (fifth), Northwood (seventh), and Grand Valley State (eighth).

WSU will continue play on Saturday, Feb. 8th, with a 4:00 p.m. match at Walsh.
