Hall of Famer Charles Primas Passes Away

DETROIT -- Wayne State University Hall of Famer Charles Primas passed away on Sunday, January 12th after a long battle with an illness.

Primas, a Detroit resident and graduate of old Miller High School, was a 1953 All-American basketball center at just over 6-2.

Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, he was a three-time letterwinner and team captain for the Tartars in 1953 and 1954.  He then played with the Harlem Globetrotters (1954-56).  The 1953 MVP pick in the Motor City Tournament and a member of the 1952 and 1953 All-Tournament teams.

Primas held the WSU season (466 points) and career scoring records (1,270 points) until the early 1970s.  He still holds the Wayne State career records for free throws made (464) and attempted (705), while ranking second in career rebounds (1,034).  Primas was the school's first 1,000-point scorer and only one of two players in 102 years of WSU basketball to get at least 1,000 rebounds.

He also held the single-game scoring mark from 1953-1960 and still holds the game (32) rebounding mark.  Primas held the made free throw game record (18) until 1992, the made free throws in a season mark (192) until 1989, and rebounds in a season total (418) until 1986.  His 19.0 rebounds per game mark from the 1953-54 season is still a WSU record, while his career scoring average of 19.5 points per game is second in program history of those with at least 40 games played.

Primas, who played in the 1954 College All Stars-Harlem Globetrotters series, was a member of the inaugural WSU Hall of Fame class in 1976.

He held three degrees from WSU and also served as Assistant Principal at the Detroit Juvenile Court Home.

In 2012, Primas was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
