Men's Swimming Solidifies Second Place Point Total at GLIACs

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving program finished the third day of the 2020 GLIAC Championships on Friday night.

WSU trails Grand Valley State 725-542 in the team standings. Northern Michigan is in third place (483.5), followed by St. Cloud State in fourth (272), Saginaw Valley State in fifth (212) and Ashland in sixth (178.5).

Redshirt senior Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt) finished second int he 500 free with a time of 4:28.89, shaving three seconds off of his NCAA B cut time prelim time (4:31.54). Sophomore Kyle Lovas (Shepherd, Mich. / Alma) also took three seconds off of his prelim time and finished third with a time of 4:30.42. Senior Leonardo de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) placed fifth (4:33.58). In the 500 free consolation finals, freshman Matt Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich.) finished 10th in a time of 4:38.48.

Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany), a redshirt sophomore, was third in the 100 back with a time of 48.07, while freshman Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Crotia) placed 10th in the consolation finals (51.14). Sophomore Chris Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi Catholic) was 14th (52.11).

Senior Joao Martimbianco Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished third in the 100 breast (55.18), while freshman Hans Anderson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) was sixth (56.58) and sophomore Derek Wilson (Marysville, Mich.) finished eighth (57.46).

Vassilakos was Wayne State's lone finals representative in the 200 fly and placed sixth (1:53.65).

WSU was the third-place team in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:41.88. The group included Ribeiro, Ahmed, Mueller and Lovas.

The Green & Gold will finish the four-day event beginning on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
