TURN BACK THE CLOCK - 1974 Men's Cross Country

In this segment of "Turn Back the Clock," we will profile the 1974 Wayne State men's cross country squad which placed 21st at the NCAA Championships out of 29 schools with 535 points for the five mile race under the guidance of first-year head coach Jerry Quiller.  The Division II national championship meet was held in Springfield, Mo., and hosted by Southwest Missouri State.

Don Richardson earned All-America honors, the first in the history of men's cross country at WSU, with a 10th-place finish in a time of 24:21.

Varsity awards went to Gary Blake, Bob Cosnowski, Dwight Holt, Mike McSween, Mike Novak, Richardson and Bob Stewart.

The Tartars compiled a 6-3 dual meet record with wins over Cleveland State (25-34), Spring Arbor (25-34), Oakland (15-43), Detroit (23-34), Western Ontario (26-29) and Chicago (26-29).  WSU placed third out of 14 schools at the Adrian Invitational and second out of six teams at the Chicago Invitational.

In the win over Detroit, Richardson was second and was followed by Novak (third), Holt (fifth), Cosnowski (sixth) and Stewart (seventh).
