Former WSU Runners Zac Truman and Reagan Justice Star in 2025 Detroit Free Press Marathon

WSU Athletics -- On a very rainy Sunday last month (October 19th), the 48th Detroit Free Press Marathon was held in downtown Detroit.  Former Wayne State University All-American runners Zac Truman ('23) and Reagan Justice ('25) did not let the weather conditions stop them from having a stellar performance in their respective categories.

Truman placed third overall out of 3,569 competitors, and finished first in his age group, running a 5:23 mile pace with an overall time of 2:20:38.  Truman earned a bachelor's degree in Finance in December of 2023 and was working on an MBA, while running for the men's cross country team.

The first time Truman planned to run in the Detroit Free Press Marathon, he came up just short of completing it stopping at the 20-mile mark, having only one full marathon under his belt going in.  He knew that he was capable of much more as the first marathon he ever ran in 2024 was enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Truman competed well in the Boston that year and knew he was going to perform much better In the Detroit Free Press Marathon when it came again in 2025.

Truman mentioned the key to training for long runs like those is to "try to have fun in practice and don't be too hard on yourself."  He added "everyone trains differently so find what works for you."  The Wayne State grad has plans to continue running competitively in hopes to quality for the 2028 Olympic trials.

Justice also represented Warrior athletics well, finishing first in her age group and second of all female runners.  She ran a 6:26 mile pace with an overall time of 2:48:09.  Justice graduated from Wayne State last May, while competing in both track and field as well as cross country specializing in the 5k and 10k most of her career for the Warriors.  She is currently a graduate assistant coach for the cross country and track teams at Western Michigan University, while working on her Master's Degree in Sports Management.

Having not run a full marathon prior, Justice qualified for the Boston Marathon at the Charlevoix Marathon in Charlevoix (Mich.), fresh off her final track and field season at WSU.  When asked why she chose to run in the Free Press Marathon she stated "I love the city and I volunteered the previous four years as a member of the Warrior cross country and track teams."  Justice added "it just it feels more special when there are so many memories."

When asked if she was expecting to perform as well as she did, Justice responded "I definitely wasn't, but I just had a lot of fun, and I'm really happy with how it went."

Justice grew up watching her mom train for and compete in marathons with the goal to run one together once she finished her collegiate career.  Both Reagan and her mom ran in the 2025 Free Press Marathon and have qualified for the Boston Marathon in April 2026, where they will both compete in their respective divisions.  Hopefully the Boston Marathon will be the time they are able to run a full marathon together the whole way through.
