Men's Golf Wins Kyle Ryman Memorial

The Warriors won by three strokes over Hillsdale.

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's golf program finished the final 18 holes of the Kyle Ryman Memorial hosted by Tiffin on Tuesday morning. The Warriors completed their wire-to-wire victory by shooting a 292 on day two.  WSU totaled an 855 (278, 285, 292) to win the 15-team event.  The two-day tournament was played at Mohawk Country Club (Par 72 / 6,705 Yards).

The first round 278 is the lowest since a 274 at the HawksHead Invitational on Sept. 29, 2019.  The Green & Gold won this event the previous time it participated during the 2017-18 season with an 869 (291, 288, 290).

HEAD COACH THOUGHTS
"This was a great team win!" said head coach Mike Horn.  "It's really good to see these young guys post a win as a team and have everyone contribute.  We had solid play up and down the lineup as well as the individuals.  We beat some really good teams.  We held off a furious rally from Hillsdale, Ohio Dominican and Findlay.  I'm really proud how we fought and ground out a win when we faced a little adversity on the back nine.  Our short game has definitely improved.  We will continue to work on that in preparation for the Motor City Invitational coming up this weekend."

LEADING THE WAY
WSU's top performer was playing as an individual.  That was Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville), who carded a 212 (70, 69, 73) and placed fifth.  Findlay's Justin Atkinson captured medalist accolades by posting a 208 (70, 70, 68).  The low-man in the Warriors' starting lineup was Matt Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) who finished tied-for-10th with a 215 (69, 73, 73).

THE FIELD
Wayne State was able to outlast Hillsdale (858) and also topped Ohio Dominican (859), Findlay (860) and Walsh (865) among others.

WSU RESULTS
Three Warriors tied-for-13th with matching totals of 216.  That trio was Sean Niles (Northville, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central), Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) and Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham).  Niles strung together rounds of 75, 69 and 72, while DiCarlo posted rounds of 70, 70 and 76.

Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) finished just behind that group with a 217 (71, 73, 73).

Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) was playing unattached and collected a 219 (72, 73, 74), while Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) shot a 230 (72, 79, 79).

UP NEXT
The final two tournaments for the Green & Gold will be home events, starting with the Motor City Invitational on Oct. 10-11 at TPC in Dearborn.
