Women's Tennis Wins Sixth Straight With 4-3 Victory Over Northwood

WSUs will play at the GLIAC Championships starting on April 23.

Box Score DETROIT --The Wayne State University women tennis squad (10-7 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) won its sixth consecutive match with a 4-3 triumph against visiting Northwood University (9-7 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the WSU Tennis Courts.

DOUBLES
Seniors Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) won their No. 3 doubles match, 6-0.

Freshmen Melanie Zampardo (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / University Liggett) and Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich. / Ann Arbor Skyline) fell at No. 2 doubles, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, junior Laura Cazacu (London, England) and senior Linda Liong (Sarawak, Malaysia) lost 6-2.

SINGLES

Trailing 1-0 after doubles and needing four victories to win the match, the Warriors did exactly that against the Timberwolves.

At No. 5 singles, sophomore Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) won 6-1, 6-2.

At No. 6 singles, junior Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) won 6-0, 6-0.

Zampardo notched a victory at fourth singles, 7-5, 6-1.

At No. 1 singles, Liong came back from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to clinch the match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 2 singles, Douglas fell 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Mandair fell at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-0.

The Warriors will play in the GLIAC Championships on April 23-April 25 at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
