Women's Tennis Places Third at GLIAC Championships

WSU defeats Northwood, 4-0.

Box Score MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 2-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis squad (12-8 overall) defeated Northwood (11-9), 4-0, in the third-place match at the GLIAC Championships at the Midland Tennis Center.  WSU finishes the year with a 10-4 mark against NCAA Division 2 opponents.  The four Division 1 setbacks were to Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Valparaiso and UNLV.
 
DOUBLES RESULTS
 
Senior Linda Liong (Sarawak, Malaysia) and freshman Melanie Zampardo (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / University Liggett) won their No. 1 doubles match, 7-5.
 
Wayne State won No. 3 doubles by default.
 
SINGLES RESULTS
 
Senior Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) won No. 6 singles by default.
 
At No. 2 singles, Zampardo won 6-3, 6-2.
 
At No. 3 singles, junior Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) won 6-3, 6-3.
