Women's Golf Selected For NCAA Postseason

The Warriors will be competing for the third straight year the event is being held.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's golf team has been selected to participate in the 2021 NCAA East Super Regional to be held in Carmel, Ind., per a release from the NCAA.  The Warriors were ranked sixth in the East Region in the final regional rankings released on April 15th.

Due to the reductions to the 2021 NCAA Division II winter and spring championships brackets/field sizes, only nine teams and four individuals will qualify for each regional with 12 teams (3 teams per regional) and 12 individuals (3 individuals per regional) advancing to the NCAA Championships which will be hosted by WSU and the Detroit Sports Commission at TPC in Dearborn on May 11-15.

The East Super Regional competition will be held at Prairie View Golf Club from May 3-5 and will consist of both team and individual competition, with nine teams and four individuals.  It is the third consecutive trip to the NCAA postseason for the program and head coach Meredith Weaver since the 2020 spring season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The WSU women's golf program was founded in 2014 and has shown marked improvement in each of the past seven seasons.  The Green & Gold started the season with a second-place finish at the SVSU Spring Invitational (629 -- 317, 312) and then placed fifth at the Findlay Spring Invite (928 -- 314, 308, 306).  WSU concluded the regular season with a fifth-place result at the Cavalier Classic (649 -- 332, 317).  The last time on the course, the Warriors posted their best-ever finish at the GLIAC Championships.  During stroke play, WSU finished third (614 -- 312, 302) before topping Northwood (3-1-1) in the semifinals of the medal match round.  Wayne State lost in the title match 4-1 to Grand Valley State to collect a second-place overall result.

Junior Daniela Moreno (Bogota, Colombia) leads the squad with a 76.4 stroke average.  She also has three top-10 finishes and a top-15 result to her name.  Both junior Grace Zimmerman (Bruce Twp., Mich. / Almont) and sophomore Avery Howard (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) have average rounds of 77.9, while Beca Vestman (Madrid, Spain) is at 78.8, and senior Brooke Busse (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) enters the NCAAs with a 79.4 stroke average.

In 2019, Wayne State finished ninth out of 12 teams with a 967 (326-322-319), after finishing 12th in 2018 with a 975 (313-330-332) in its inaugural appearance in the NCAA Regionals.
