Women's Basketball Collects Road Win Against Parkside

Four players scored in double figures in the victory.

KENOSHA, Wis. -- In a back-and-forth game, Kate Sherwood's (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) bucket in the closing seconds helped the Wayne State University women's basketball team (9-4 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) knock off Parkside (6-10 overall, 3-5 GLIAC), 85-84, Thursday night.

FIRST QUARTER
The Warriors didn't see many shots fall in the opening minutes of the game, falling behind 8-2 just three minutes into the period.  Sherwood provided the lone bucket.  WSU started to find its rhythm, trailing 15-12 at the media timeout (2:46).  Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) scored on a pair of layups, while Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.), Sherwood and Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) added baskets to close the gap.  Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) tied the game at 18-18 at the 1:33 mark of the period, but the Rangers quickly responded with a three pointer to claim the lead right back.  After Sherwood split a pair of free throws, Parkside added a layup with under five seconds in the period to take a 23-19 lead into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
Cherney started the second period scoring with a layup, bringing the Warriors within two (23-21).  Later in the frame, Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) would get the Warriors to within one (29-28) on a three pointer at the 5:40 mark.  However, the Rangers quickly went on an 8-0 run to extend their advantage to 37-28 with 4:35 remaining in the quarter.  Cherney put a stop to that run with a layup, and completed the three-point play by making the free throw.  After George split a pair of free throws, McArthur drained another three to close the gap to two (37-35), with 3:11 to play before the break.  Cherney eventually tied the game 37-37 at the 2:30 mark of the period.  From there, however, the Rangers strung together a 7-0 run, taking a 44-37 lead into the half.

THIRD QUARTER
Sherwood drained a triple off of an assist from Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) to bring the score to 44-40 just minutes into the second half.  A George jumper moments after that brought the Warriors within two (44-42).  Parkside responded with a three-pointer to stretch its lead back to 47-42 at the 7:42 mark of the period.  Alyssa Nelson brought the Rangers' lead back to seven on the next trip down the floor.  With just over five minutes to play in the frame, McArthur buried her third triple of the game to get the Warriors back within four (54-50).  As they did to close the first half, the Rangers ended the frame strong, scoring the final four points, including a basket at the buzzer.  Parkside had a 65-57 lead entering the final stanza.

FOURTH QUARTER
The Warriors scored the first four points of the fourth period, with Sherwood making a pair of free throws and Cherney adding a layup.  Miller and Sherwood drained three pointers, with a Parkside triple sandwiched in between.  The Warriors trailed 68-67, with 7:18 to play.  Nelson scored six straight points for Parkside to help the Rangers build a seven point advantage.  That run was halted by a Miller three-point play with 6:16 to play in the contest.  After Parkside free throws, George completed her own three-point play, bringing the score to 76-73 in favor of the home team.  Tripp eventually tied the game 78-78 with 4:16 to play on yet another three-point play.  The Rangers regained a two-point advantage with 3:41 to go in the contest.

With just over two minutes to play, Sherwood gave the Warriors the lead 81-80 on the Warriors' fourth three-point play of the quarter.  A Maddy Harrison layup gave Parkside an 82-81 advantage with 25 seconds to play.  That bucket was quickly answered, as George pushed the Warriors in front with a layup, forcing a Parkside timeout with 21 seconds to play.  Nelson added two more to her game-high 26 points, pushing the Rangers back in front.  The Warriors called a timeout with 17 seconds left in the game.  WSU had an answer out of the timeout, as Miller found Sherwood for a layup, putting the Green and Gold in front 85-84 with just five seconds to play.  Nelson's attempt with the clock winding down was off the mark, and the Warriors escaped with the victory.  The Warriors outscored the Rangers 15-8 over the final 5:57 of play.
