Men's Tennis Finishes Play at ITA Cup

The Warriors had three players participate.

ROME, Ga. -- Three Wayne State University men's tennis players had the opportunity to play at the ITA Cup, formerly known as the Small College Nationals, this past weekend at the Rome Tennis Center.

Dom Spicer (London, England) was selected in the singles draw after finishing as a semifinalist at the ITA Midwest Regional.  Spicer fell in his first match of the tournament, losing to the No. 3 overall seed in North Georgia's Joaquin Benoit.  He lost by a final score of 4-6, 2-6.

However, Spicer completed the weekend by winning his next two matches. He downed a challenger from Maryville, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and defeated Azusa Pacific's Leyton Bohren, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, the Warriors had their top pair of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) competing.  However, the tandem lost a tough battle in the opening round of the tournament.  Drenth and Grey were upended 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-10.

Like Spicer, Drenth and Grey went on to win their next two matches of the tournament.  The duo made quick work of a pair from Washburn University, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win.  In their final match of the weekend, the Warrior's top team earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over players from Northwest Missouri State.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will have one more fall tournament before gearing up for their regular season in the spring.  The Green and Gold will participate in a tournament at Cleveland State on Nov. 5-6.
