Women's Tennis Shows Promise at Hillsdale Invite

Five different players went 2-0 in singles play.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team had a successful two-day tournament at the Hillsdale Invite this past weekend.  Several players were able to post wins in singles and doubles.

SINGLES
Five players had undefeated outings in singles play, including Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland), Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland), Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia), Shanice Weekes (London, England) and Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich. / Ann Arbor Skyline).  Komar played at the No. 3 flight, earning wins over challengers from Northwood and Hillsdale.  In her first match, she battled to a 6-7, 6-4, 14-12 victory.  In her next match, Komar was able to cruise to a 6-1, 6-3 win.

Szpakowska was strong at the No. 4 flight, earning wins over players from Walsh and Northwood.  She opened with a close, three-set victory over Walsh's Yasmina Mayer (6-2, 4-6, 10-5).  She then had no trouble winning her second match, earning a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Gorgidze was also strong for the Warriors, as she played at No. 5 singles.  Like her teammates, she opened with a tight, three-set victory.  She defeated Walsh's Carla Padberg 6-2, 4-6, 11-9.  In her next match, Gorgidze had less trouble, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win over a challenger from Northwood.

Weekes was dominant in her two singles matches, having no trouble taking care of either opponent.  In her first match, Weekes came out and collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory.  She then went on to record a 6-0, 6-1 win in her second match of the tournament.

Like Weekes, Mandair also found little resistance in her matches.  Playing at No. 8 singles, Mandiar notched a 6-1, 6-1 victory to open the tournament.  She then upended her opponent 6-1, 6-2 in the second match.

Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) didn't go undefeated, but she did register a win in the tournament.  She beat Hillsdale's Melanie Zampardo, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 at the No. 2 singles flight.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold also had a strong pair in doubles, as Gorgidze and Szpakowska went 2-0 in the tournament.  They began with a 6-4 victory over a duo from Hillsdale.  The Warriors' pair then went on to collect a 6-1 win over opponents from Walsh.

Komar and Arafat struggled at the top flight, dropping both of their matches.  They fell 1-6 in the opening match before falling 5-7 in their second match of the tournament.

Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) and Mandair only played one match at the No. 3 flight, but they were defeated 4-6 by challengers from Hillsdale.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will have some time off before they travel to Western Michigan for another tournament in November.  WSU will be in action from Nov. 11-13.
