Five Volleyball Standouts Earn All-GLIAC Recognition

Giroux voted GLIAC Freshman of the Year

DETROIT -- Five members of the 2022 Wayne State University volleyball squad received All-GLIAC honors at this evening's GLIAC Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the GLIAC Championships.

Freshman middle blocker Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) and graduate student outside hitter Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) were both voted to the All-GLIAC First Team.  In addition, Giroux was selected as the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

Earning Second Team All-GLIAC recognition were graduate student setter Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and senior libero Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy).

Graduate student middle blocker Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) was named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team.

Giroux started all 18 GLIAC matches and played in all 65 sets during league play.  She totaled 179 kills (2.75 kills/set), which ranked second on the squad and 15th in the GLIAC.  Her .338 hitting percentage for conference matches ranked second in the GLIAC.  Giroux recorded 57 blocks (11 solo, 46 assisted) in GLIAC play, which tied for second.  She posted double-digit kill totals in 11 of the 18 conference matches, including a season-high 17 at Purdue Northwest.

VanderWal finished fifth in the GLIAC in both kills (214) and kills per set (3.29), while ranking sixth with 239 points.  A First Team All-GLIAC selection in 2021 as well as receiving an Honorable Mention All-Midwest Region accolades from the AVCA a season ago, VanderWal was among the league leaders in both digs (158) and total blocks (31) during conference play.

Duffield earns her third All-GLIAC honor having been a Second Team selection in 2020-21, and a First Team honoree in 2021.  She ranked third in the GLIAC with 625 assists and was among the league leaders in digs with 157.  She has nearly 4,800 assists in her Warrior career and recently surpassed the 1,000 dig plateau.  Duffield has been part of more than 150 career blocks and has totaled 112 career service aces.

Benoit played in all 65 sets during GLIAC matches and totaled 329 digs (5.06 digs per set), which ranked third in the league.  She was among the league leaders with 17 service aces.  Benoit set career highs this year with 560 digs and 33 service aces, while playing all 29 regular-season matches.  Last night's GLIAC quarterfinal match was the 100th of her career.  Benoit has 106 career service aces and 1,559 digs.

Shell started all 29 regular-season matches for the Green and Gold and was among the league leaders for GLIAC play in kills (146), kills per set (2.28) and total points (180), while ranking 10th in hitting percentage (.276).  She ranked in the top five in every blocking category (third in block solo with 12; fourth in total blocks with 56; and fifth in both block assists with 44 and blocks per set at 0.88).

The Warriors had a 12-6 conference mark along with a fourth-place finish in the GLIAC standings.
