Men's Basketball Travels to SVSU For Saturday Match-Up; Hosts Dearborn on Tuesday

Warriors begin GLIAC play Saturday at Saginaw Valley State.

DETROIT -- After extending its winning streak to two games with an 83-77 win over Tiffin on November 20, Wayne State suffered a 79-66 setback at Lewis two days later to fall to 2-3 on the season.  The Warriors will play four games in nine days to conclude their pre-exam slate.  WSU visits Saginaw Valley State for a 3 p.m. start in the GLIAC opener for both squads.  Wayne State then entertains Michigan-Dearborn on Tuesday, December 6 at 7 p.m.  The Warriors will host Purdue Northwest on December 9 (7:30 p.m.) and Parkside on December 11 (3 p.m.)

THE SERIES
Wayne State trails 38-45 in the all-time series against the Cardinals which dates back to 1976.  Saginaw Valley has won the last three meetings (by a combined 16 points), and the last six contests between the squads at James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.  WSU's last win in University Center was a 68-61 triumph on January 18, 2014.  The Warriors are 14-25 all-time at SVSU.

WSU will be playing Michigan-Dearborn in a regular-season contest for the first time since December 12, 2017.  The Warriors hold a 25-1 edge in the all-time series with the only setback coming in December of 1982.  WSU is 19-0 at home against the Wolverines, but all those contests came at the Matthaei, which UMD has been using as one of its home facilities this fall.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Saginaw Valley posted a 91-86 victory over Great Lakes Christian on Tuesday to improve to 3-4.

Tre Garrett leads a trio of Cardinals averaging in double figures at 15.6 PPG.  Freddie McIntosh is scoring 13.4 PPG and has dished out a team-best 29 assists, while Jiovanni Miles had made a squad-high 15 triples and is averaging 10.0 PPG.

Garrett leads SVSU in rebounding (6.4 RPG) and steals (11), while Kevonne Taylor has a team-best 13 blocked shots.

Randy Baruth is in his 11th season at Saginaw Valley State.

SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
Michigan-Dearborn has compiled a 1-9 mark, not including a 101-64 exhibition loss to Grand Valley State on Saturday.  UMD hosts Rochester this evening (Nov. 30) and Indiana Tech on Dec. 3.

Elwood Tomlinson leads the Wolverines in scoring (12.1 PPG) and three-pointers made (20), while Jimmy Breaux has grabbed a team-best 58 rebounds (5.8 RPG).  Maurice Anderson is second in scoring (9.8 PPG) and leads the squad in steals (13).

Head coach Domenic Policicchio III is in his second season with the Wolverines.

Freshman Carmelo Harris leads a quartet of Warriors averaging in double figures after five games.  Harris (16.0 PPG), Antonio Marshall (12.6 PPG), Avery Lewis (12.4 PPG) and Ray Williams, Jr. (10.0 PPG) pace the WSU offense.

Harris has made a team-best 10 triples, with Marshall (9) and Williams, Jr. (8) just behind as the trio has accounted for 27 of WSU's 33 three-pointers.

Three individuals are averaging at least four boards per contest with Lewis grabbing a team-high 26 rebounds (5.2 RPG).  Williams, Jr. (4.4 RPG) and Marshall (4.0 RPG) are the other two crashing the boards.

Marshall and Lennox have combined for 25 of Wayne State's 45 assists on the season, with Marshall leading the squad with six steals.

INTRODUCING COACH SMOTHERS
Wayne State officially began a new era in the men's basketball program last month as 2020 Hall of Fame inductee Bryan Smothers became just the second former WSU student-athlete to lead the program (joining Newman Ertell who lettered from 1921-25, then became head coach in 1929 for the College of the City of Detroit).  Smothers is the 11th head coach (including interim) since Detroit Junior College began playing basketball in January of 1918.

The 2022-23 campaign is the 105th season of Wayne State basketball (no games were played in 1943-44 due to World War II).
