Men's Swim and Dive Completes Day 1 Versus Northern Michigan and Findlay

The Warriors will swim against the Oilers and Wildcats tomorrow morning.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team competed against Northern Michigan and Findlay Friday night inside the Matthaei Natatorium.  The Warriors, Wildcats and Oilers participated in a meet that included shootout 50-yard races and individual medley races where the stroke order was determined seconds before starting.  Final team scores are still being determined. 

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
After making it through two heats of the 50 fly, Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) was able to top the field in the final showdown, posting a time of 22.15.  In the 50 back, Clayton Kinnard (Dexter, Mich.) was also the top swimmer, edging the top swimmers from Findlay and Northern Michigan.  He touched out in 23.51 in the final heat. 

In the 50 breast, Joey Dombkowski (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) was the Warriors' representative in the final heat, and he finished third with a time of 26.42.  Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) was strong all night, and he took care of business in the finale of the 50 free, winning the final heat with a time of 20.30. 

In the longest event of the night, the Green and Gold were able to get two of the top-three finishers.  Thomas Jackowski (Wroclaw, Poland) and Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 700 free.  Jackowski recorded a time of 6:40.55 and Jones earned a time of 6:45.25.  

In the one-meter diving event Jeffrey Cottingham, Jr. (Dearborn, Mich. / Edsel Ford) placed second by posting a score of 264.15.  Andy Maiz (Northville, Mich.) was third with a score of 255.45.  Grant Porter (Haslett, Mich.) was able to top the field in the three-meter competition.  He finished with a score of 290.23. 

RELAY RESULTS
To open the meet, the quartet of Kinnard, Dombkowski, Wolsek and Cvetko finished second in the 200 medley relay.  The team registered a time of 1:33.22. 

To finish up the night, Wayne State's foursome of Cvetko, Wolsek, Noah Barstad (Allen Park, Mich.) and Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:23.15.

"After this first day...my goodness there's some great racing out there!  I was so impressed by all the races and teams, but we are looking at three teams that are in the top 20 and it showed today with their camaraderie, competitive spirit and overall performances.  The Warriors got challenged today, but we met and raised our performances to meet it.  Looking forward to another fast day tomorrow at 10 am!"

Wayne State will be back in the pool against Findlay and Northern Michigan tomorrow morning at 10 AM inside the Matthaei Natatorium.
