Men's Tennis Completes Fall Season with Strong Showing at Cleveland State Tournament

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team completed its fall schedule with a strong showing at the Green and White Invitational, which was hosted by Cleveland State this past weekend.  The Warriors had two players make the All-Tournament Team, as Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) and Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) were the top athletes for the Warriors. 

SINGLES GREEN FLIGHT
Grey was terrific throughout the two-day tournament, compiling a 3-0 record.  In the first round of the main draw, Grey had no trouble with his opponent, earning a 6-3, 6-3 victory.  In the next round, he took care of business against an opponent from Cleveland State.  He won by a final score of 7-6 (9), 6-2.  To close out the tournament, Grey won his tightest match of the event, earning a 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory. 

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany), Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Dom Spicer (London, England) also played in the green flight.  Each of the three lost their first match of the tournament.  From there, Karcz was able to win his next two matches, earning a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 13-11 victory over a challenger from Duquesne and posting a 6-4, 7-5 win in his final singles match of the tournament. 

SINGLES WHITE FLIGHT
Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom) and Alexander Stage (Arslev, Denmark) were the Wayne State representatives in the White Draw.  Kelt opened the event with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory.  He followed with another strong performance, recording a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the second round.  Kelt was then bumped into the Green Flight, where he was upended 6-7 (2), 6-1, 1-10 in the final round of the tournament. 

Stage struggled in this matches, falling in both of singles appearances.  In the opening round, he fell 3-6, 4-6.  In his next match, he was defeated 5-7, 2-6.  

SINGLES MAGNUS FLIGHT
Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich. / St. Joseph), Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) and Mikkelsen competed in the Magnus Flight for the Warriors.  Mikkelsen collected a pair of wins in the Magnus Flight before being bumped into the White Flight and earning another win there.  In the opening round, Mikkelsen was able to register a 7-6, 7-5 victory.  He then posted a 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 win in the next round.  After being bumped up a flight, Mikkelsen was still able to record a win, downing his opponent 7-5, 4-6, 12-10. 

Steele only played two matches in the tournament, and was able to record a 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 win and a 6-1, 6-0 victory.  Okonski went 1-2 in the tournament, as he collected a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory in the opening round of the tournament.  He was then bumped into the White Flight, where he fell, 1-6, 0-6.  He dropped back into the Magnus flight for the final round, but was upended 6-4, 2-6, 11-13.  

DOUBLES GROUP A
The Warriors had three teams in the top flight of doubles, with Drenth and Grey being the Green and Gold's top team.  The duo earned three wins on day two of the tournament.  They opened with a 6-4 win and followed with a 6-1 victory.  In the final round of the tournament, Drenth and Grey were able to post a 6-4 victory over challengers from Duquesne. 

Mikkelsen and Stage were able to go 2-1 in the tournament.  After dropping their first match 2-6, the duo was able to bounce back in a big way.  The two newcomers won their next match 6-3 before earning a 7-6 (4) victory to close out the tournament.  Spicer and Karcz were also able to collect a 2-1 mark in the tournament, as the duo dropped their first match before winning out the rest of the way. 

Spicer and Karcz fell 4-6 in the opening round, but the duo was able to notch a 7-6 (4) victory in the second round of play.  To close the tournament, Spicer and Karcz were able to record a 6-4 win.  

DOUBLES GROUP B
The Warriors only had one team in the B Flight, with Kelt and Steele earning a 1-2 record in the tournament.  The duo lost their first two matches of the tournament before earning a win in the last round.  To open play, Kelt and Steele fell 5-7.  In the next round, the tandem dropped their match, 1-6.  However, in the final match of the tournament, the duo was able to notch a 6-3 victory. 

UP NEXT
The Warriors have concluded their fall schedule and will resume preparation for the spring season.  The Green and Gold will open the spring season against Lawrence Tech and Northwood on Feb. 3.
