Women's Basketball Takes Down Purdue Northwest

Sam Cherney and Grace George each reached double figure point totals.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (14-5 overall, 10-4 GLIAC) continued its hot stretch, defeating Purdue Northwest (8-14 overall, 5-10 GLIAC) by a final score of 59-47.  The Warriors have now won seven of their last eight games.

FIRST QUARTER
Neither team could muster up much offense in the opening minutes, as the score was knotted at 2-2 through three minutes of play.  Purdue Northwest took a 6-2 lead before a Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) three-point play brought the Warriors back to within one at the midway point of the frame.  Down the stretch of the period, the Green and Gold found its stroke, with George burying a triple and Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) adding four points.  The Warriors led 12-8 after the first stanza.

SECOND QUARTER
WSU took advantage of the Pride's shooting woes early in the second frame.  The Warriors opened the period on a 13-4 run and led 25-12 with 3:26 to go before halftime.  George and Sam Cherney (Farmington, Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) would provide all the points in that run, as Cherney poured in eight and George had five.  PNW would answer back with a run of its own, trimming the Warriors' lead to 25-18 with just over a minute to play in the first half.  After trading buckets with under a minute to play, Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) banked in a layup to give the Green and Gold a 29-20 advantage after 20 minutes of action.

THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors carried that momentum into the third period, eventually going up 17 (46-29) with 2:12 to play in the stanza.  Cherney had nine points in the run, George contributed five and Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) buried a triple.  However, the Pride would score the final nine points of the frame, bringing the score to 46-38 with 10 minutes to play.

FOURTH QUARTER
Purdue Northwest scored the first four points of the last period, drawing within four (46-42) of the Warriors.  George quickly silenced that run, with a seven-point outburst of her own, pushing the Warriors' lead back to 11 (53-42).  The Green and Gold converted all of its free throws down the stretch to collect a 59-47 victory.

TEAM STATS
The Warriors had the advantage shooting the ball, hitting 36 percent (19-of-53) of their looks from the field compared to PNW's 32 percent shooting percentage (18-of-57).  In the rebounding category, the Warriors edged the Pride, 40-34.  The Green and Gold also blocked 10 shots, while Purdue Northwest swatted eight shots.
