Men's Basketball Falls 65-53 At Northern Michigan

Neely, Marshall and Lewis each score in double figurs.

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (5-15 overall, 4-13 GLIAC) suffered a 65-53 setback at Northern Michigan University (13-11 overall, 9-8 GLIAC) on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
After falling behind 5-0 in the first four minutes, redshirt junior forward Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) scored on a jumper to get the Warriors on the board.  Over the next four minutes, the host Wildcats tallied eight of the next 15 points to extend their lead to four at 13-9.  Senior guard Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) totaled six of WSU's seven points during that stretch.

NMU led 19-14 with nine minutes left in the first half following a dunk by Justin Kuehl.  Back-to-back jumpers by redshirt senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) and Lewis cut the Warrior deficit to one (19-18).  Following a triple by Wildcat Nick Wagner, WSU pulled even with a dunk by sophomore Mike Robinson (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) and a jumper by freshman Freddy Johnson (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill).  After Northern Michigan's Max Bjorklund split a pair from the charity stripe, jumpers by Johnson and Marshall gave WSU a three-point advantage (26-23) with just over two minutes left.  The Wildcats scored four of the final six points of the opening half to narrow Wayne State's margin to one at 28-27.

SECOND HALF
The Warriors scored the first six points after intermission on a pair of free throws by Lewis, a jumper by freshman David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy), followed by a jumper from Lewis to lead by seven (34-27).  NMU evened the score at 38-38 on a triple by Carson Smith just past the mid-point of the second half, which ignited an 8-0 run by the hosts.

A jumper by Neely at the 7:00 mark ended the scoreless drought and cut the WSU deficit to three at 43-40.  Wayne State trailed by four (49-45) following a Marshall jumper with just under five minutes left.  A 9-2 spurt by the Wildcats over the next three minutes exteded the NMU advantage to 11 (58-47).  Northern Michigan made all six of its foul shots in the final 67 seconds to secure the win.

TEAM STATISTICS
Wayne State shot 31 percent (22-of-70) from the floor, while NMU connected on 36 percent (19-of-53) of its field goal attempts.  WSU was just 5-of-26 (19 percent) from three-point range, with the Wildcats making 9-of-24 (38 percent) long-distance shots.  The Warriors shot just seven free throws, making four (57 percent) compared to Northern Michigan's 18-of-23 (78 percent).  Wayne State had a 48-39 edge in rebounding, but was out-scored 23-2 on fast-break points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Lewis notched his fourth double-double of the campaign with 12 points and a game-high rebounds.  Neely tallied a team-best 15 points, while Marshall chipped in with 12 points.

Smith scored a game-high 21 points off the NMU bench, whie Bjorklund contributed 13 points.

Wayne State will stay up north and play at Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon.
