Men's Swimming/Diving In Second Place After First Day of GLIACs

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team is in second place after day one of the 2022 GLIAC Championships being held at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center.

TEAM STANDINGS
Grand Valley State is first with 277 points, the Warriors are second with 202 points.  Northern Michigan is third (156) and is followed by St. Cloud State (140), Saginaw Valley State (110), Davenport (69), and Augustana [S.D.] (57).

200 INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
Sophomore Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) placed third with an NCA "B" cut time of 1:49.26.  Freshman Clayton Kinnard (Dexter, Mich.) finished fourth and improved his NCAA "B" cut time touching the wall 1:49.35.  Rookie Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.) completed the trifecta of NCAA "B" cut times placing sixth (1:51.23).

50 FREE
Sophomore Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) placed second with an NCAA "B" cut time of 19.88, edging out junior Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia), who improved his "B" cut time and finished third in 19.94.  Senior Stewart Nowinski (Macomb,Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) moved up one place from the prelims to finish fourth in an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.37.

Senior Noah Barstad (Allen Park, Mich.) had a 15th-place finish (21.37).

1000 FREE
Senior Kyle Lovas (Shepherd, Mich. / Alma) finished seventh in a time of 9:33.23.

Senior Sam Krahn (Dexter, Mich.) had a time of 9:46.23 in the morning session, which held on for 16th place.

ONE-METER DIVING
Senior Grant Porter (Haslett, Mich.) placed fourth with a score of 393.85.

200 MEDLEY RELAY
The WSU contingent of graduate student Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany), Kinnard, Wolsek and Cvetko won the GLIAC title with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:28.08.

200 FREE RELAY
The Warriors claimed their second GLIAC relay title of the championships as the group of Cvetko, Nowinski, Wolsek and Mueller took first place by over two seconds (1:18.82 to 1:21.12) and also broke the GLIAC Championship meet mark set last year.  The quartet was within .03 of the all-time GLIAC mark (1:18.79) set by WSU in 2019 (Ryan Katulski, Sasha Palazzo, Nowinski and Mueller).

UP NEXT
Saturday's prelims will consist of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 Free, and the 400 medley relay.
