Men's Swimming and Diving Finishes Third at GLIAC Championships After Scoring Correction

Wolsek wins 100 free.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team, despite being out-scored 146-113 by Northern Michigan on the final day, originally held on to second place by a single point.  However, a few days after the meet was completed, it was discovered that 9 through 16 finishers in a diving event were not included.  The Team Standings paragraph below reflects the updated scoring totals.

TEAM STANDINGS
Grand Valley State took first place with 989 points, while NMU had 585 points compared to the Warriors at 584.  St. Cloud State was fourth (436), and was followed by Saginaw Valley State (403.5), Davenport (267) and Augustana [S.D.] (245.5).

100 FREE
Sophomore Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.), who posted the top time (44.43) during the prelims, won the GLIAC title with a "B" cut time of 44.19.

Senior Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) finished ninth (45.84), while classmate Noah Barstad (Allen Park, Mich.) was 12th (46.45).

200 BACK
Freshman Clayton Kinnard (Dexter, Mich.) won the Consolation finals in 1:49.80 to finish ninth.  Senior Chris Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi Catholic) placed 15th (1:54.83).

200 BREAST
Sophomore Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) finished third in a time of 2:01.23.

1650 FREE
During the morning session of the timed final, freshman Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.) posted the top time of 15:55.24, which held up for fifth place in the final results.

Senior Kyle Lovas (Shepherd, Mich. / Alma) placed 13th (16:28.31).

Senior Sam Krahn (Dexter, Mich.) was 20th (16:35.78), while senior Chris Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) placed 21st (16:37.80), and sophomore Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) was 24th (16:53.20).

400 FREE RELAY
The quartet of senior Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany), Wolsek, Jones, and junior Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) finished second with a "B" cut time of 2:57.24.

UP NEXT
Wayne State may attend a last chance meet to earn additional "B" cut times with NCAA selections being announced on Wednesday, Feb. 23rd.
