17 Women's Indoor Track Student-Athletes Garner All-Academic Recognition

WSU had 14 All-Academic Excellence Honorees.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad had 17 GLIAC All-Academic honorees, including 14 on the All-Academic Excellence Team. The 14 Excellence Team honorees was tied-for-third in the GLIAC. The WSU women's indoor track and field squad has had 122 All-Academic recipients in the last eight years.

Criteria states the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season, and not a freshman or a first-year transfer student.

Named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 were seniors Yasmine Affes (Northville, Mich.), Aliyah McDonald (Kingston, Jamaica), and Chloe Wandell (Muir, Mich. / Ionia), juniors Thailyia Christensen (Flushing, Mich.), Cameron Martella (Gaylord, Mich.), MaKayla Rawls (Detroit, Mich. / Birmingham Seaholm), Katherine Ray (Novi, Mich.), Makenzie Wank (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake), Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.), and Charlene Yarema (Romeo, Mich.), along with sophomores Abigail Dunn (Northville, Mich.), Emily Esker (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin), Mikaela Owen (Bridgman, Mich.), and Macie Ries (Mason, Mich.).

Affes (Exercise and Sport Science), McDonald (Kinesiology Honors) and Wandell (Kinesiology) each earned All-Academic Excellence Team honors for the third consecutive indoor season. Christensen (Marketing), Martella (Public Health Honors), Ray (Sport Management & Business Management), Wank (Biomedical Engineering Honors), Williams (Management) and Yarema (Communication Sciences and Disorders Honors) were recognized for the second straight indoor season. Dunn (Public Health Honors), Esker (Mathematics), Owen (Accounting), and Ries (Accounting) are recipients in their first season eligible. Rawls (Political Science) was also a first-year eligible after transferring from Western Michigan for the Fall of 2020.

Wayne State had three representatives on the All-Academic Team for having a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.49. This group consisted of seniors Teanna McCuaig (Sparta, Mich. / Kent City) and Izzy Taylor (Three Rivers, Mich.), and junior Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.).

McCuaig (Exercise and Sport Science) garnered her third straight GLIAC All-Academic recognition, while Taylor (Biological Sciences) and Sumrall (Neuroscience) were honored for the second straight year.
