Women's Golf Falls in Medal Round Semifinals

The Warriors finished third in stroke play with a 609 (304, 305).

AUGUSTA, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's golf program advanced to the semifinals of the medal rounds at the GLIAC Championships on Saturday after shooting a 609 (304, 305) to finish third.   The top four teams meet in the medal rounds and WSU fell to second-seeded Northwood by a score of 3-2.  The Warriors have advanced to to the medal round every year it has been played since it was introduced in 2019.  The event was played at Stonehedge North Golf Club (Par 72, 5,289 Yards).

STROKE PLAY
LEADING THE WAY

Grace Zimmerman (Bruce Twp., Mich. / Almont) was the Warriors top finisher after she carded a 150 (76, 74) and tied-for-seventh.  Grand Valley State won the stroke play competition with a 587 (298,, 289).  Julia Sanchez from GVSU was the low individual with a 145 (74, 71).

THE FIELD
Behind GVSU was Northwood (598), while WSU edged Saginaw Valley State (619).  Ferris State (636) was fifth, while Northern Michigan (647), Davenport (651), Lake Superior State (661) and Purdue Northwest (671) rounded out the field.

WSU RESULTS
Avery Howard (Muskegon, Mich. / Reeths-Puffer) finished tied-for-11th with a 152 (73, 79).  Daniela Moreno (Bogota, Colombia) also shot a 152 (78, 74) to tie-for-11th.

Beca Vestman (Madrid, Spain) tied-for-17th with a 156 (77,79), while Logan Potts (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores) shot a 163 (85, 78).

SEMIFINALS vs. NORTHWOOD (L, 2-3)
Moreno was three strokes better and won her match with a 78, while Vestman won her matchup by two strokes by shooting a 73.  However, Zimmerman dropped a back-and-forth battle by one stroke and carded an 82.  Howard fell by five strokes with a 76 and Potts' counterpart was four strokes better than her 81.


UP NEXT
The Warriors will await final word from the NCAA on Monday when the field for the Super Regionals are announced.  WSU has been sixth in both sets of rankings released so far.  Wayne State has competed at the NCAA Regionals each of the last three seasons (2018, 2019 and 2021) it was held.  The 2021-22 academic year is WSU's eighth sponsoring women's golf.
