Men's Tennis Downs Lewis to Advance to NCAA Midwest Region Final

The Warriors had singles wins from Luke Laws, Cedric Drenth and Ben Lakeman.

DETROIT -- Serving as the host for the opening rounds of the NCAA Midwest Region, the Wayne State University men's tennis team (22-4 overall) downed Lewis (14-9 overall) 4-0 Monday afternoon at the Titan Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of Detroit Mercy.  The Warriors will now square off with the winner of Grand Valley State and Ferris State.

SINGLES
After dominating in doubles play, the Warriors were in need of just three singles wins to clinch the match.  Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) provided one of those three wins, making quick work of his opponent at No. 6 singles.  He won by a final score of 6-0, 6-1.

The next to win was Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany), who put together an impressive showing at No. 5 singles.  He defeated his opponent, 6-4, 6-3.

To close the match, Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot of the lineup.

With the match being clinched, Dom Spicer (London, England), Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) had their matches abandoned.  However, all three were either leading or tied in their respective matches.

DOUBLES
The Warriors didn't take long to clinch the doubles point, as the No. 2 and No. 3 teams were strong.  Playing at No. 2 doubles, Spicer and Laws were dominant, collecting a 6-1 win.

Lakeman and Karcz weren't far behind, notching a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.

Drenth and Grey were unable to finish and had their match abandoned with the Warriors clinching the doubles point.  However, the duo was ahead in their match at the top spot of the lineup.
