Women's Tennis Comes Back to Beat Northwood, Earns GLIAC Tournament Championship

The Warriors had singles wins from Anais Ruyssen, Marta Komar, Laura Cazacu and Sabrina Laynes.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- Wayne State University sophomore Anais Ruyssen (Nantes France) and Northwood senior Liza Velichko were the last ones standing on the court at the Midland Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.  The two squads were knotted at 3-3, and their No. 1 singles match was going to decide which team won the GLIAC Tournament Championship.

They had each won a set, and Velichko broke Ruyssen early in set No. 3 to take a 3-1 advantage.  But Ruyssen, the GLIAC Player of the Year, wasn't going to go down without a fight.  She kept herself close and was able to even the set at 4-4.  From there, she showed why she was named the league's best player, winning three of the next four games to claim a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory.

Just a week after falling to Northwood (15-7 overall) on the same court, WSU (14-7 overall) was able to avenge the loss and grab the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the fourth time in program history.

SINGLES
The Warriors dropped the doubles point, but they were able to win four singles matches to claim the title.  Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) knotted the match at 1-1 with an impressive 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles.

The Timberwolves took the lead back, as Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) fell in the No. 6 spot, 5-7, 2-6.

However, Laura Cazacu (London, England) was able to tie the match moments later with a win at No. 3 singles.  She defeated her opponent, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) put the Green and Gold in front, recording a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.

Northwood tied the match at 3-3, with Linda Liong (Sarawak, Malaysia) dropping her match at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7), 1-6, 2-6.

However, Ruyssen delivered the final blow, upending her opponent, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5.

DOUBLES
The Warriors dropped the doubles point, as Cazacu and Liong were the only pair to earn a win.  They posted a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot of the lineup.

Komar and Ruyssen were defeated 3-6 at No. 1 doubles.

Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) and Laynes dropped their match at No. 3 doubles, 4-6.
