Men's Tennis Moves to NCAA Quarterfinals with Victory Over SNHU

Wayne State will play Embry-Riddle in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Playing in its first ever Round of 16, the 10th-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (24-4 overall) collected a win over Southern New Hampshire (11-3 overall), defeating the Penmen 4-0 Wednesday morning at Sanlando Park.

DOUBLES
The Warriors started hot, earning the coveted doubles point.  Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia) and Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) were strong at the No. 3 spot, posting a 6-1 victory.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) secured the doubles point for WSU by defeating their opponents 6-3 at the top spot of the lineup.

Dom Spicer (London, England) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) had their match abandoned, but the duo was up 5-3 when play was halted.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold carried that momentum into singles play, as the Warriors claimed three wins to secure the match.  Drenth put the Warriors ahead 2-0 with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 spot.  He has won his last 16 matches.

Right behind him was Karcz, who was able to defeat his opponent 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.  That put the Warriors up 3-0 in the match.

To clinch the match, Laws continued his hot stretch of tennis, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.  Laws has now won 10 matches in a row.

Spicer, Lakeman and Grey had their matches unfinished, but all three were either leading or tied at the time of the stoppage.

UP NEXT
