2022 Football Position Previews - Quarterbacks

DETROIT -- Over the next few weeks, we will be previewing each position on the 2022 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units. This segment is on the quarterbacks with coach Jeff Reardon.

In 2021, WSU had three different quarterbacks start games as graduate student Jake AmRhein started the season opener and the season finale. In between, redshirt freshman Josh Kulka (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) started games 2 and 3, before suffering a season-ending injury at Missouri S&T. Senior Chase Churchill started seven consecutive contests (weeks 4 through 10).

Kulka, who passed for 505 yards and three touchdowns in just six quarters of action a year ago, while also contributing 70 yards on the ground, should be fully healthy for the start of camp.

Redshirt freshman Elijah Taylor (Warren, Ohio / Warren G. Harding) gained valuable practice experience last season dressing for 10 of the 11 contests.

Redshirt junior Jay Solano (Trenton, Mich.) enters his fourth year in the program, while redshirt sophomore Caleb Green (Calumet City, Ill. / Thornton Fractional North) will also be pushing for a spot on the travel roster.

Wayne State recruited a highly-talented signal caller to add to the depth and competition. Cole Canter (Newark, Ohio / Catholic) led the Green Wave to a 14-2 record as a senior and a spot in the Ohio Division 7 state championship game. He passed for 2,300 yards and 32 touchdowns as a senior, along with seven rushing touchdowns. Canter earned Second Team All-State accolades in 2021 from the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association after receiving Third Team honors as a junior.
